Photo Montage

UmbraframeNow that fall is officially here, I've succumbed to my annual tradition for welcoming in the new season: developing my summer photos.  What better way is there to offset the cold weather than reminiscing about those picnics in the park, neighborhood barbecues, trips to the beach... minus the unpleasant memories of mosquito bites and sunburns.  It's always reasurring to have a little reminder that, though it may be the dead of winter, warmer climates are just around the corner.

So put your summer memories on display -- wall and table frames (like this one by Umbra) with spaces to hold three or four photos are perfect for creating a collage of your favorite shots. Choosing a sleek, urban design keeps the focus on the most important part of a frame: the photo inside.  Add a taste of summer to your home that you can keep all year round!

How YOU Can Help

Without question, Hurricane Katrina is still on our nation's mind -- while the winds have subsided, the people of the gulf coast are still feeling it's after-effects.  Do your part to help those who have fallen victim to Katrina --  donate your time or money to these Austin events and organizations going on now:

  • Volunteer at an Austin shelter: visit the Red Cross Office to find out where help is needed.  The Capital Area Food Bank is also looking for volunteers.
  • Donate personal hygiene items, backpacks, baby items, new clothing, flashlights, and non-perishable food items that do not require refrigeration, heating or a can opener to your nearest Salvation Army drop-off point.
  • Fundraising events are happening all across Austin, including benefit shows at locations including Emo's and the Erwin Center.  Show up for a good time, and give what you can.

FALL-ing in Love!

Fallshoesblog

Heels and I have never exactly gotten along.  I may drool over a pair of stilettos as much as the next girl, but the minute they're strapped to my feet, I start teetering.  Apparently I never inherited the grace or inner-ear balance associated with my gender (or maybe I shouldn't have skipped out on cotillion in junior high)... no matter how many imaginary runways I walk down, I just can't seem to wear a heel without feeling like I'm about to topple over.

For those of us trying to maintain our poise (hopefully I'm not the only one!) a solution is in sight.  With the changing of the seasons comes a new spin on an old favorite: the wedge.

Now, don't panic -- these are not the infamous wedges of the 1990s, those clunky Baby Spice atrocities that were somehow termed as stylish.  The wedge of the millennium has slimmed down and shaped up, giving you the look and height of a heel, without... the actual heel.  Choose a rounded or peep-toe, and colors and patterns from this year's autumn palette for a fall staple that goes with both skirts and jeans.  More surface area to stand on means less of a chance of embarrassment via the laws of gravity -- it's pure physics.  My inner-ear is feeling better already!

Go Batty!

Batsky Austin's favorite winged mascots, the bats of Congress Avenue, are finally getting the recognition they deserve! BATFEST, the first annual two-day celebration for these creatures of the night.  On September 3-4, the Congress Avenue Bridge will be closed off for the event, which includes live music and entertainment on 2 stages, craft booths and nature displays, activities for the kids, a Celebrity Bat Breakfast on Sunday, North Austin vs. South Austin tug-o-war, remarks from global bat authority, Dr. Merlin Tuttle, and of course, prime seating for the main event -- the bat's emergence at 8:15 pm.  Cheer on the millions of Mexican Free-tail Bats as they fly into the night!  Or just show up for the attractions... we don't think the bats will mind.
