Cowgirl Chic

Cowboychic_1Here in the Lone Star State, there's no escaping it -- there's a little cowgirl in each of us, begging to come out.  So maybe riding horses into town is a bit passe... but even us urban cowgirls can find ways to flaunt that Texas pride:

  • Do-Se-Do: Grab your partner and mosey on down to one of Austin's many dance halls -- we suggest The Broken Spoke -- and bust out with your best western moves.  No experience is necessary -- that's what those announcers are for.
  • Saddle Up: Escape those city blues and ride out to the nearest Dude Ranch -- it's about the closest you can get to the wild, wild west.  Or, if that sounds a bit too wild for your tastes, fill the bed of your truck with hay and take yourself on a hayride, and go pet the goats over at the Austin Zoo!
  • Get a Little Bit Country: It don't mean a thang if it ain't got that twang!  While washboards and mouth harps may not be in style, bluegrass and roots-country music is on the rise again.  Check out some toe-tapping tunes from musicians like the South Austin Jug Band at venues all over town.
  • Wrestle Up Some Grub: In Texas, good eatin' is spelled B-B-Q.  And in Austin, you can be sure there's no shortage of that finger-licking brisket the state is famous for.  Grab your steak knife and head over to your favorite barbecue restaurant, for a meal fit for a cowpoke!
  • Make it a Western: Relive the heyday of horse operas (the name in the biz for western movies) with a John Wayne movie marathon.  This silverscreen cowboy is the king of saloons, shoot-outs, and swaggers... the west never looked so good.
  • Leather it Up: What is a cowgirl without her leather?  From boots to belts to bags, there's always plenty of options when it comes to dressing up those levis in true desperado style.

Tell Us What You Think: What makes YOU proud to be a Texan?

Wood you be mine?

Woodearring

It may seem like there's no escape from this Texas heat (our Heat Index has been reaching 108 degrees!), but never fear -- fall, slowly but surely, is on its way.  Soon we'll be able to stop cowering in the air-conditioning and move outdoors, to bask in that golden glow of autumn.  Celebrate the coming season by bringing the woods into your wardrobe!  The look for fall is au naturale -- deep blues, golds, wines, auburns and olives pulled straight from the natural landscape; choose to accent your outfits with ornaments derived from the elements, like wood, shell, and bold gems.  Bring out your inner earth-mother and start communing with nature!

Bust out the granola and the Peter, Paul and Mary... and celebrate the Autumnal Equinox!

We Like Mike

Mikeylikesit

Before the pajama-party court cases, the missing nose, the baby-dangling... that was the Michael we knew (or thought we knew) and loved.  And that is the Michael that should be celebrated!

The Alamo Drafthouse Downtown agrees: they're hosting a MICHAEL JACKSON SINGALONG this Thursday and Sunday, paying tribute to the days where he reigned as the King of Pop.  The lineup features all 18 glorious minutes of Bad, a black Jacko in Rock With You, Black or White (the original, full-length, banned-from-tv version!), and Captain EO (the first showing since Disneyland shut down the attraction), as well as Moonwalk contests and, as Alamo promises, "plenty of opportunities for you to stand up out of your seat and grab your crotch while screaming, 'A hee heeeee!' ".

See the history of Michael's amazing facial transformations!

You've Been Framed!

Candy_4It seems you can never get enough picture frames.  Sure, they're the perfect little gift for any occasion and there's sure to be a style to match any personality; we've all had our moments, encountering that HAD-to-have-it frame that you know would go so well in the living room.  Needless to say, over the years we're all acquired our fair share of frames... now what?  Put them on display!  If you've run out of the usual random snapshots, here are some alternate ideas on how to fill those frames to reflect your own personal style.  Because believe me, you can only have so many pictures of your cat strewn across the house before you start looking creepy.

  • Go Grayscale: the sophisticated look of black and white photography always adds a touch of class.  Pick up a roll of black and white film (be sure to pick film that can be processesed at your regular one-hour-photo developers) and start snapping!  Choose your favorite spot around town to shoot some landscapes, or get your friends and family to pose for portraits.
  • Turn Back Time: add some retro style to your room -- visit your local thrift or vintage store, or just hit up mom and dad's to find pictures from old magazines, postcards, or even some ancient family photos.  Some old centerfolds from Life or National Geographic (or Playboy, if that's your thing) might look great on your walls, while a kitschy Missing you in Maui postcard might deserve a place on your dresser.
  • Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: sometimes the frame is an artwork in itself.   Show it off by turning it into a mirror!  Visit the craft store or mirror retail store (yes, they do exist) and find one that fits the dimensions.  This way, whenever you look at it, you'll see the person you love most... yourself, obviously!
  • Gallery Space: So maybe you're not the next Picasso -- that shouldn't stop you from using your frames to showcase your latest artwork!  This could be anything from your 4-year-old nephew's rendering of a dinosaur, your favorite silk-screen t-shirt (retired due to over-use and giant holes), a collage of name-tags from your various fast-food employments... anything that you think deserves a space of honor in your home.  The possibilities are endless!

What do you think?  What do you keep inside your favorite frame?

Back to School in Style!

Blogarrific_2For those of you who, like me, braved the malls this tax-free weekend, this should come as no surprise... school is almost in session.  As I watched frazzled mothers dragging their unobliging children into dressing room after dressing room, stuffing them into stiff new jeans and sneakers, I admit I felt a little nostalgic.  I distinctly remember those night-before jitters of my early days, spent laboring over the perfect ensemble to christen the new school year.  Back in elementary school, this usually consisted of a pink jumper with leggings (granted, this was the eighties), complete with my favorite Minnie Mouse necklace and plenty of chunky pink bracelets.  My style has grown significantly since then (I've 86-ed the leggings at least), but on days like today, I long to recapture that pink whimsy of my youth.

Enter Tarina Tarantino.  This is one jewelry designer who never quite grew up - note the hot pink hair - and we love her for it!!  Her designs are the upscale answer to your elementary-age fashion sense; bright, chunky lucite beads in vibrant colors appeal to your inner kid, to the days of My Little Pony and Pretty Pretty Princess.  You'll be the envy of every playground.

See which members of young, hot, and hip Hollywood are wearing Tarina!
