What to BE for the holidays

OrnamentsIt can be hard to pull yourself away from cooking, wrapping and shopping long enough to delight in the holidays.  This one's for Mom, this one's for Sis...isn't the joy supposed to come from giving the gifts?  Or maybe it's really after the gifts, when it's all said and done; torn paper is scattered about the room, the only sound is the crackle of the fire and everyone can just be.  Now, that's what the holiday's are about. You've hung decorations, you've baked cakes and cookies, you've fed family, you've bought gifts and the real solace comes on the night of 25th.  Aaaahh--you can finally en-joy the holiday.  Remember, ornaments and stockings can only take you so far, the rest is up to you.  But a little advice: if you find yourself flagging in zeal mix up some hot chocolate, grab a good book and snuggle up by a fire...and, you guessed it, just be!!

Last chance for lights...

Trailoflights_1 Cruising south down Mopac on a cool night in December comes with a gift.  As you cross Town Lake the twinkle of of lights begins to emerge on the horizon and dance along the water's edge.  It's the famous Zilker Park Trail of Lights!! (click the pic for info) And if you haven't seen it, you must! Snuggle up with your honey and get ready for a mile of lights!  Trees shining from top to bottom, lit scenes of holiday fun; if you've been feeling particularly grinch-y this season, then the trail will certainly conjure the magic of the holidays.  Not to mention that it is a standard dating stop during December.  The trail goes dark on the 23rd so make sure you bundle up and go for a walk soon.  School is out, the kids are restless; treat everyone around you to the joy and wonder offered by thousands of lights.  And maybe, just maybe, if you listen hard under the big tree you'll hear the cheerful chuckle of the big man in the red suit...

Take a bite out of this!!

Jaqualotn You've got to love the sweet smell of confection.  Personally, I can't imagine a person ever rejecting anything sweet.  But I know there are those who exist without dessert, although I must say, what a lonely life for your taste buds! (Although maybe it's a better life for your waistline...)  If you are, as I am, one who immediately perks up at the slightest inkling of the chance to consume a chocolate cake, then these sapid little lotions are the perfect stocking stuffer...for yourself. (And, if their lucky, your friends and family!)  Dreamy, ultra-whipped body cream that, best of all, contains the essence of, among other things, chocolate and buttercream.  Imagine infusing your skin with super moist lotion and spending the rest of the day submerged in the scent of a pastry shop.  Moreover, think of everyone who would have to fight the urge to nibble on you...hmmmm.  You may want to get extra and save it for Valentine's Day! (wink wink!)

Sweet candy and desserts can make great Holiday gifts for your friends...or treats for you...to boost your holiday spirit, right?!!

Let's hear from you: If you've got a sweet tooth, what is your favorite dessert?  Are there any treats you make especially for the Holidays?  Share your recipe's!!

If Christmas never came...

Safeplace I wonder what it would be like if Christmas never came.  If the tree never stood in the living room and ornaments never swung from its branches.  If a rainbow of lights never twinkled through its greenery.  I wonder what it would be like if Christmas never came.  If a lit fire never beckoned family home and stockings never bubbled over with trinkets.  If there were no chestnuts for roasting.  I wonder what it would be like if Christmas never came.  If no brightly wrapped gifts collected under the tree and no cookies were left overnight for Santa.  If no one had to be told to go to sleep for fear of spoiling something magical.  I wonder what it would be like if Christmas never came...

You probably have your own traditions at the holiday season.  Unfortunately, for many families yearly traditions are difficult because life just isn't that consistent.  Every year Austin Safeplace (click the pic for info) collects goods for the Holiday season.  EMERALDS wants to make sure no one ever feels loss at Christmas, so there will be collection boxes at our stores.  We are focusing on household items. (You can check our list for specifics.)  You'll be amazed by how much giving a little extra can brighten your holiday.  Maybe your gift will be the reason a family starts a Christmas tradition of their own this season.

There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else. --Peyton Conway March

Fur Purse

Furpurse To all the animal right's activists out there--don't be alarmed...it's not real fur.  This winter faux fur is an absolutely acceptable substitute for the real thing.  But I'm not talking about P. Diddy sporting his metro-sexual full-length Chinchilla coat.  I'm talking about fur as an accessory.  Fur wraps, fur hats, fur purses...if you want to glamorize any outfit, add a little fur.  Unfortunately with the winter months comes colder weather (ideally); and cold weather means lugging big coats around to all the nighttime events.  Boo!  Who wants to cover that slinky sweater and hot tweed mini?  Solution: fur wraps.  Nothing says elegant Audrey Hepburn-style like a fur wrap matching a fur hat matching a fur bag...you might as well be sipping martinis with the beauty icon herself!  The bottom line is fur has been around warming the extremities of the stars for years.  But hip faux-furry accessory style has given all of us the chance to flaunt sophisticated winter vogue with the best of them!!
